It is true that biologically women have been equipped to be mothers and wives. Try as men might, it would be impossible to even conceive of men carrying out these roles. Such being the case, it is true that women should be mothers and wives; in fact they have to be. However the issue here is, is that all they should be? It is sad but true, but the stand taken by many societies in the past has been that women should not be anything more than mothers and wives. In fact it is sad that this position still persists in many societies.
If all women are mothers and wives , we will be pushing aside half of the human race from the area of life. In that half may be many geniuses, scientists and humanitarians. Putting aside the question of fairness for a while, this would be a great waste. On the question of fairness this does not make sense at all. Since one the greatest prides of the human race is freedom, treating woman in anyway less than men would certainly be an act of grave injustice.
One argument that has been frequently presented as a reason that women should be wives and mothers is that this is what women want to be. Here we have an excellent argument; so it seems. Giving them what they want would certainly be just; but will it? First of all we should look at the societies which claim that this is what the women want. We will observe that the society will be organized in such a way that the women do not even know that they can be anything else. For generations it would have been drummed into them that the ideal of women would be to be weak, to be protected and loved as wives, lovers and mothers. They would never have been told that they could be anything else. In many instances proper education would have been denied them. The situation is akin to asking a blind man if he would like to have sight, when he does not really know what he is accepting or refusing.
To place people in fixed roles first of all demeans them and treats them like animals and objects. Women, like men, should be allowed to make choices. They should be what they want to be. Moreover, they should be made fully aware of what the choice entails. If after being fully aware, they make the choice to be nothing but wives and mothers than they have made the choice from knowledge.
The crux of the matter is this: Men and Women should be what they want to be, out of choice and after being fully aware of the choices they have. Hence my argument is that women should not be just mothers and wives; unless this is what they want to be.
