The element of water is essential to life. Without it, life as we know it will just cease to be. It is present everywhere; and is responsible for much that is going on in this beautiful world.
Two third of the earth's surface is water. The entire earth and all the life forms depend on water for their lives. The main sources of water are the oceans. In addition we have seas, lakes and rivers that move in and out of the land. Nature has an excellent reason for the gigantic stretches of water. This is responsible for cooling the land and making it inhabitable. If is also the presence of these giant stretches of water that enables plants to survive on land. The seas and rivers too are rich with food sources. In fact without the food sources from the sea, there is no enough food to sustain life in the world. Where there is little or no water in the deserts, there is no life.
The importance of water is seen in the fact that all early civilizations began near rivers. Man cannot be away from water as he requires the precious liquid for so many purposes. As if in reflection to the vastness of water in the world, seventy percent of the human body consists of water. To keep the ratio of water in the body constant, man and all creatures and plants have to keep taking in large quantities of water everyday. Hence man can never wander far from water. Because of this, wars have been fought over who should control the waterways. In many of these wars, the spirit of defenders had been broken as soon as they lose their water supplies.
To every living thing, water is second only to air. Without water to keep the body cool, the body will dehydrate and just shrivel and dry up. Persons who do not strenuous activities need larger amounts of water then those who do not. In fact if the body loses beyond a certain amount of water, the person collapses and _ unless medical help is given immediately _ death follows. The body just cannot function without water.
It is hence a dangerous trend that there is a worldwide neglect of water. Much of it being polluted and wasted. Together with other 'crimes' against the environment, water pollution has to be fought against. Life itself depends on it.
